Matthew Colaizzo’s new series of paintings meditates on humanity’s penchant for ordering and controlling the natural world. In Window, a painting oppressively paved over with black bricks, the small window reads like a sliver of hope. In another light, the delicacy with which the bricks are rendered and the imperfection of the painting—the way it’s based on the artist’s intuition as much as logic or the laws of perspective—posits a warmer, less domineering type of human construction.
